Rescue & Rehab

The Marine Mammal Conservancy is a member of the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Marine Mammal Stranding Network.  Since 1987, members of MMC have responded to over 152 whales and dolphins with 55 successful rehabilitations and releases to our credit.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A STRANDED MARINE MAMMAL!

Pygmy Sperm Whale - 2/23/08

This male Kogia breviceps stranded Saturday behind a private home in Islamorada. Stabilized at the stranding location, he was transported successfully to MMC where he died after 5 days.

Offshore Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin - 1/30/07

This pregnant female stranded in November on Vero Beach and spent 79 days in rehab at Mote, recovering enough to be approved for release. She restranded immediately, however, and was brought to MMC's site for continued rehab.

27 Rough Toothed Dolphin - 3/2/05

The dolphins stranded approximately 2000' offshore in various oceanside locations in Marathon. MMC, together with Stranding Network members from the Southeast Region, stabilized the animals prior to relocation to three rehabilitation sites.

7 Rough Toothed Dolphin - 8/6/04

The dolphins stranded near Hutchinson Island and were rescued by network members from HBOI. After stabilization, they were transported to Mote Marine Labs in Sarasota, where they were named after the seven dwarfs. Learn about their rehab at Mote.

Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin

August 2004-Tursiops truncatus strands near mile marker 11. The fatal stranding ended in necropsy performed by network members in Key Largo.

Atlantic Bottlenose Release

An Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin stranded on 11/5/03. The 6' long dolphin was entangled in a lobster trap. MMC rescued the dolphin and brought it to their property in Key Largo. Read about his rehab and release.

Pilot Whales

Mass stranding! Five pilot whales rescued in April and released back to the wild on Sunday, August 10, 2003. Click here for more information.

Kokomo

From January 22, to February 27, 2003, MMC's efforts were with a pygmy sperm whale we named Kokomo. Read Kokomo's story.

Doc

Found beached near Naples, this dwarf sperm whale we called Doc was transported to the MMC site in Key Largo. Rehabilitation was not successful, but data compiled from Doc's brief stay in our care (June 4 - 15, 2002) will be used to treat others of his species. Read about our time with Doc.
